Standing in the middle of the gym floor, judges raised high in the bleachers. Eighth grader Sydni Kinsey was at the bottom getting ready to perform her lyrical solo to the song “call your mom”. Kinsey has been dancing for ten years now.
“One time I went to dance camp and when I was there I knew I wanted to keep dancing,” Kinsey said.
Kinsey’s strength is in lyrical movements and she deeply feels the music when she dances. Sydni dances like a real ballerina, her feet were perfectly pointed and her body perfectly moving to the style of the dance and song.
“Every time I dance, you always forget about time and I think that goes for each dancer and even group dances that are hip-hop or jazzy,” Kinsey said.
She can express her emotions through dance and this is also why she started dancing in the first place. The types of dances she has been trained in are ballet, jazz, and contemporary. Sydni’s favorite style of dance is contemporary.
“You can almost tell the audience the story behind your music, expressions, and choreography,” Kinsey said.
Sydni wants to dance through high school and eventually get on a college dance team at TCU and be on their dance team.
“I am a very strong dancer with lots of emotion,” Kinsey said.
Dance team captain Scarlett Bobo feels like she is a good teammate.
“Sydni is so full of joy and she always gives us a room with her positivity and her enthusiasm. Every dance class, every competition, pep rally. Sydni is open to help and talk to anyone at these events and that’s what makes her so easy to work with,” Bobo said.
“I have worked really hard to get to where I am today, without dance I don’t know where I would be today. Dance defines who I am and I’m proud of it,” Kinsey said.
