Cheer captains are leaders and an important part to the cheer team. Being a cheer captain comes with a lot of responsibility, patience, and creativity. In order to be a captain you have to go through a long process of tryouts.
Marley Hampton 8th grade head captain is a true leader, and puts in a lot of work to make the middle school cheer team the best it can be. Marley says “Be a leader not just for the cheer team but for the whole school.” Marley’s job as a head captain is to “lead warm ups, make halftimes, and pep rallies.” Marley said “football season was really stressful because there are a lot of people watching you, and you have to stay positive.” For Marley she believes being a head captain is a lot of commitment “I work on pep rallies everyday and during football season I worked on halftimes in and outside of class.” Marley said. Marley’s favorite part about being head captain is “being able to lead everyone with my co captains by my side.”
7th grader Abby Dearmen, is on the MMS cheer team. Abby is trying out for 8th grade captain for the next upcoming season. Abby said “I’m most nervous about the interview part for the tryouts.” Abby has a lot to do to try out for captain. She has to “perform my dance and cheer in front of judges, then we make a leadership portfolio and get questions asked then perform a band chant that we made up.” Abby said she wants to be a cheer captain because “I want to be a positive influence and help the cheerleaders reach their goals.” Abby said.
Cheer captains carry a lot of responsibilities, and they put in a lot of work in and outside of school. Even though trying out for captain is a very long and hard process it is all worth it in the end when you get to help cheerleaders accomplish their goals.

He ran his hardest, and just locked in, just like at every meet. “My brain just stops and my body just operates itself and somehow navigates [itself] like autopilot,” Murry said.](https://mmsrewind.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot-2025-02-26-11.35.51-AM.png)
